When Murphy terminated the call, he was surprised to find that he was sweating and breathing heavily. He knew he had to calm down before Officer OâSullivan came through the door to question him. He put the burner phone back in his pocket and wiped the sweat from his forehead. He leaned back in the chair, closed his eyes and tried to get his breathing back to normal.
It turned out he didnât have anything to worry about as Officer OâSullivan didnât show up until about twenty minutes later. By that point, Murphy had calmed down and was actually feeling quite cocky. He knew he had the perfect alibi. If anyone ever questioned where he was when the ransom call was made, he could quite confidently state he was at the police station giving a statement. The idea had come to him when heâd heard about Frank being in the drunk tank when the kids were abducted. Nothing better than having the cops be your alibi.
Murphy sailed through Officer OâSullivanâs questions like a breeze. Murphy told him heâd been out drinking with Frank on Friday night, which was the absolute truth. He told him he was home sleeping it off the next morning, which made perfect sense. He told him heâd installed a hot water heater on Saturday afternoon and then gone out drinking again on Saturday night. He even confessed that he might have been over the limit when heâd been driving, and thatâs why heâd tried to reach his lawyer.
âAnd what did your lawyer say?â Officer OâSullivan asked.
âI never actually spoke to him,â Murphy said. âI guess the receptionist dropped the call when she put me on hold.â
When Murphy walked out of the police station later that afternoon, he was full of confidence that he was going to get away with everything.
